Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc.

By the beginning of the 1980s, more and more women from culturally diverse backgrounds were pursuing college degrees. Five women came together and decided to create a support system for these women, a student organization that would celebrate diversity and foster progress for years to come. These five sophisticated women founded Mu Sigma Upsilon, with the intent to unify women while observing their differences.

Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 21, 1981 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick as the first multicultural minority Greek letter society in the nation. The organization is comprised of women from various ethnic backgrounds, races, creeds, and religions.

Since its establishment Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. has grown to a membership of over 1,000 unique women with recognized chapters in 14 states as well as Washington D.C.

The sisters work toward the intended purpose established by the organization’s founding mothers: to set forth a positive image of all women and promote cultural awareness. All sisters of MSUstrive to attain the sorority’s three main goals: academic excellence, unity among all women, and to be active in the university and community. The members of the various chapters located across the nation participate in many campus and community service projects such as: volunteering at local soup kitchens and food banks, hosting cultural programs, job fairs and blood drives to name a few. Alumnae sisters serve as mentors and also participate in many campus programs as well as community service projects. Members of MSU share their culture through their diverse sisterhood, continuing efforts to educate society, and, most important, the strength one can find in sisterhood and family. The sisters of MSU have a willingness to succeed, a sense of purpose to hold to our discipline of academic achievement, and a dedication to the enrichment of the community.
